The Graduating Class of 2024 has been etched into �԰ɵ��� (�԰ɵ���) history.

On June 7, more than 800 of �԰ɵ���’s record number 1,853 graduates crossed the stage at the Polytechnic’s 60th Convocation Ceremonies.

For Lauren Milne, a recent graduate of �԰ɵ���’s Cook Apprenticeship program, being involved in the milestone Convocation Ceremonies was special.

“I am honoured to be part of �԰ɵ���’s history,” says Lauren, who has called central Alberta home for the past 10 years. “It has been a very enriching and truly enjoyable experience at �԰ɵ���. I am a little sad to close this chapter but am very excited to see what lies ahead.”

Following high school graduation in Kitchener, Ontario, Lauren began working in the service industry and found her passion. After gaining several years of work experience, she made the important decision to pursue a post-secondary education and advance her competencies. Lauren’s return to the classroom was made easier by the welcoming learning environment at �԰ɵ���.

“My instructors were very supportive and helpful which made the process of going back to school less intimidating." 

As a mother and wife, Lauren wanted to take a program that suited her lifestyle and fulfilled her career aspirations.

“The Cook Apprenticeship program was a great fit for me. I was able to continue working full-time while pursuing a career I love,” adds Lauren, who attended classes on �԰ɵ���’s main campus one day per week during the three-year apprenticeship.

Lauren appreciated many aspects of the Polytechnic’s three year Cook Apprenticeship program.

“I want to thank Chefs Garnett and Miranda, along with my amazing classmates for helping to create a wonderful and fun experience,” says Lauren, who is currently preparing to write the Red Seal Cook exam.  “While I was happy to develop my knowledge and skills, I am inspired to learn more in the future.”

Lauren is currently making an impact in the food service industry and plans to further her education to expand her opportunities.

“I am currently working at Hiy Steaks Restaurant in Red Deer Resort & Casino. Eventually, I hope to pursue a business degree and start my own business,” she says. “Having a thorough education and experience can prepare anyone for anything. Going back to school has certainly opened many doors for me.”

As she managed a busy schedule during her apprenticeship, Lauren has been especially grateful for her family.

“My husband has been a huge support when I decided to enrol in the Cook Apprenticeship program,” she says.

Lauren has many reasons to be proud of her accomplishments. Along this journey, she has perhaps inspired the next generation to fulfill their personal and professional goals. 
“My children have been a constant source of motivation,” she says. “Pursuing this program with my two children watching has been very rewarding.”
