�԰ɵ�� ranks in top 50 for research among Canadian polytechnics and colleges

�԰ɵ�� (�԰ɵ��) is proud to be listed as one of Canada’s Top 50 Research Polytechnics and Colleges by . Ranked 43 overall, �԰ɵ�� was also ranked fourth for completed research projects, 19th for research partnerships and 17th for paid student researchers.

“To be recognized across Canada for our multi-disciplinary applied research is an honour and it reflects �԰ɵ��’s commitment to advancing our research capacity,” says Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Associate Vice President, Applied Research. “We are excited to continue growing our partnerships and solving challenges for industry and the community. By aligning our teaching, learning and applied research with Alberta’s key economic and social priorities, we make a significant impact in the province and beyond.”

In 2022, �԰ɵ�� attracted more than $2 million in applied research investment. Home to the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC) and Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), �԰ɵ�� is a leader in advanced manufacturing and energy innovation applied research. The CIM-TAC, which houses $7.6 million in prototype and advanced manufacturing equipment, completed 64 projects for 57 companies and had more than 1,300 engagements with business and industry partners in 2022.

�԰ɵ�� students, faculty and staff also engage in multi-disciplinary applied research with community partners, such as the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC). Together with CACAC, �԰ɵ�� is identifying best practices related to integrated practices for child advocacy.

In addition to housing modern facilities on campus, �԰ɵ�� offers expertise and resources that support advancement of research across a variety of research themes. Along with supporting applied research that is conducted by members of the Polytechnic community, �԰ɵ�� collaborates with entrepreneurs, industry, not-for-profits and government. These partnerships help to solve key problems in the areas of manufacturing, sustainable energy, rural and community health and wellness, environment and ecology, and child advocacy.

�԰ɵ�� continues partnership with universities to accelerate applied research

�԰ɵ�� (�԰ɵ��) faculty and staff will grow their impact through applied research, thanks to a $27.3 Million investment by the Government of Alberta to post-secondary institutions through the Major Innovation Fund ( MIF). �԰ɵ�� is one of the post-secondary institutions that will continue to collaborate with the Universities of Alberta and Calgary during the next four years to accelerate research and commercialization because of the MIF funding. �԰ɵ�� will receive $800,000 from the MIF funding within three projects. “We’re enthusiastic and eager to be collaborating with other post-secondary institutions to solve industry challenges in the medical devices, clean energy, and space and defense sectors,” says Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Associate Vice President of Applied Research. “Our team is focused on applying the state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on experience we have at �԰ɵ�� to commercialize new technologies in order to strengthen and diversify the economy. �԰ɵ�� showcases its impact through applied research

The diverse ways in which faculty, staff and students make an impact through applied research by solving society’s challenges was on display yesterday at �԰ɵ��’s (�԰ɵ��) annual Research Showcase. During more than 20 different presentations, �԰ɵ�� faculty, staff and students presented to about 150 community members some of the current applied research that they are conducting. Presentations highlighted the breadth of programming and applied research at the Polytechnic, with topics that spanned disciplines including animation and visual effects, education, nursing, science and sociology. “The Research Showcase demonstrated the vast research that is led by learners, faculty, and staff from across the institution, addressing challenges and opportunities in industry and society,” says Dr. Paulette Hanna, Interim Vice President Academic. “As a polytechnic, we connect our applied research, education, and training to develop skills, knowledge and solutions that provide meaningful impact for Alberta and further abroad.” One of the students who participated in �԰ɵ��’s Research Showcase was Payton Baltzer. Federal funding for the Polytechnic's CIM-TAC supports growth of health care device manufacturing in central Alberta

As part of �԰ɵ��’s (�԰ɵ��) continued pursuit of excellence in applied research, the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing (CIM-TAC) has been awarded $570,000 in federal funding to purchase health care device manufacturing equipment. The federal investment is being provided through PrairiesCan’s Regional Innovation Ecosystem (RIE) program. The RIE program provides targeted investment to not-for-profit organizations that support businesses to innovate, grow and compete globally. The contribution has enabled the CIM-TAC to purchase a new resin polymer 3D printer and a laser engraver, as well as the computer equipment and consumables required to run them. The funding also builds on PrairiesCan’s previous investment of more than $1.7 million to expand CIM-TAC into a regional hub for innovation services for central Alberta. “Helping Alberta’s manufacturers with the adoption and integration of digital manufacturing is a large part of what we do,” says Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Director of the Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation at �԰ɵ��. “These new transformative technologies are out there, but there are barriers to adoption.
