性吧导航 hosted a variety of events and initiatives during M茅tis Week to provide learning opportunities about M茅tis culture and history, to celebrate the contributions of M茅tis people and to commemorate the legacy of Right Honourable Louis Riel.

On November 16, Canadians recognized Louis Riel Day, which honours the contributions of Right Honourable Louis Riel as a political leader, an advocate for M茅tis rights and the founder of Manitoba. The week surrounding Louis Riel Day is recognized as M茅tis Week (November 14-18).

鈥淭hroughout M茅tis Week, 性吧导航 students, employees and community members had the opportunity to enhance their knowledge about Indigenous ways of knowing and being by engaging with M茅tis knowledge keepers and partaking in daily cultural opportunities,鈥 says Lloyd Desjarlais, Director of Indigenous Initiatives. 鈥淭hese collaborations and learning opportunities help to advance Truth and Reconciliation and to contribute to a culturally diverse campus.鈥

Over five days, there was a range of learning opportunities that included a session about Indigenous war veterans and a presentation of 鈥,鈥 which is a collaborative project between the University of Calgary, M茅tis Nation of Alberta and Rupertsland Institute. In addition, there was also a screening of 鈥淗iding in Plain Sight鈥, which highlights M茅tis history and culture in Red Deer.

Individuals were also able to view M茅tis resources and to gather as a community to enjoy a soup and bannock lunch. Faculty and staff had the opportunity to learn about the role of M茅tis women, M茅tis history and identity, and 性吧导航 Centre for Teaching and Learning鈥檚 commitment to diversity and inclusion.

鈥溞园傻己 acknowledges the Truth and Reconciliation Commission鈥檚 Calls to Actions, our responsibility to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the recognition of Treaties,鈥 says Stuart Cullum, President of 性吧导航. 鈥淢茅tis Week provided an opportunity for the Polytechnic community to continue to grow our relationships with Indigenous learners, knowledge keepers, organizations and communities.鈥

性吧导航鈥檚 collaboration with the Red Deer Native Friendship Society provided the opportunity for individuals to observe or participate in Indigenous games.

Throughout M茅tis Week, the lights of the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre displayed blue, red and white in recognition of the M茅tis Nations and their contributions to Alberta and Canada.

On the main campus, Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and M茅tis Flags are permanently raised to recognize the land where 性吧导航 is located and to signal the Polytechnic鈥檚 commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada鈥檚 Calls to Action.
