Recognition of Scholarly Activity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning graphic

Recently, 性吧导航 (性吧导航) celebrated its faculty鈥檚 scholarly activity and independent applied research at the Recognition of Scholarly Activity (RoSA) Awards and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (ETaL) Capstone Recognition Event.

鈥淎t 性吧导航, we are proud to acknowledge the diverse scholarly activity and applied research projects that has been conducted by faculty during the past year,鈥 says Dr. Alison Jeppesen, Associate Dean, Division of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship. 鈥淭he RoSA Awards and ETaL Capstone Recognition Event is one example of how we demonstrate our commitment to teaching development, life-long learning and the advancement of research that creates positive impact across Alberta, Canada and the world.鈥

性吧导航 faculty were recognized for their breadth of scholarly activity in four categories: Discovery, Integration, Application/Engagement and Teaching. The following 16 award recipients were honoured at the event for their influential and broadly disseminated scholarly activity during 2023:

In greater depth, as one example of the applied research activity that was recognized at 性吧导航鈥檚 recent RoSA and ETaL Capstone event that will directly impact students in the future is Dr. Stephen Brown鈥檚 work on .

鈥淚n my review paper, I provided an overview of the substantial body of evidence that suggests that matching teaching and learning styles does not improve educational outcomes,鈥 says Dr. Brown, a Psychology instructor. 鈥淚nstead, educators can explore systematic cognitive neuroscience, focusing on knowledge that students can practically use, such as information on executive functions like working memory and planning ability.鈥

Another example of the breadth of scholarly activity at 性吧导航 is Natalie Ford鈥檚 research and co-authored paper titled . In collaboration with Larissa Gomes and Dr. Brown, Ford wanted to cultivate evidence-based teaching practices as a nurse educator. 

鈥淢y interest to support difficult conversations in the classroom while promoting agency in learning prompted the investigation into pedagogical practices in the nursing ethics course I was developing,鈥 says Ford. 鈥淭he research project progressed through the support of the 性吧导航 research community and the Polytechnic鈥檚 Centre of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship.鈥

The Recognition of Scholarly Activity (RoSA) Committee has celebrated significant scholarly endeavours by 性吧导航鈥檚 faculty since 2006.

Along with honouring the RoSA Award recipients at the event, Raymond Savage, Business instructor, was also recognized for completing a capstone project. Capstone projects are the final component of the Excellence in Teaching and Learning Program (ETaL). This is a Career Development Certificate credentialed through the Polytechnic鈥檚 Continuing Education and Corporate Training division. During the three-year program, faculty meet in interprofessional groups to explore teaching and learning in post-secondary.

Scholarly activity and capstone projects enhance the experiences of 性吧导航 students, faculty and communities and help to address societal and industrial challenges.

性吧导航 showcases its impact through applied research
The diverse ways in which faculty, staff and students make an impact through applied research by solving society鈥檚 challenges was on display yesterday at 性吧导航鈥檚 (性吧导航) annual Research Showcase. During more than 20 different presentations, 性吧导航 faculty, staff and students presented to about 150 community members some of the current applied research that they are conducting. Presentations highlighted the breadth of programming and applied research at the Polytechnic, with topics that spanned disciplines including animation and visual effects, education, nursing, science and sociology. 鈥淭he Research Showcase demonstrated the vast research that is led by learners, faculty, and staff from across the institution, addressing challenges and opportunities in industry and society,鈥 says Dr. Paulette Hanna, Interim Vice President Academic. 鈥淎s a polytechnic, we connect our applied research, education, and training to develop skills, knowledge and solutions that provide meaningful impact for Alberta and further abroad.鈥 One of the students who participated in 性吧导航鈥檚 Research Showcase was Payton Baltzer. He is enrolled in the Polytechnic鈥檚 Bachelor of Science 鈥 Biological Sciences program and is also a forward on the Kings Basketball team. 性吧导航 continues to provide opportunities for students to engage in applied research that advances the economic and social priorities of communities.鈥 Recently, 性吧导航 hosted the Student Science Conference and Agora Conference which celebrated and shared the research that was conducted by 性吧导航 learners.鈥 鈥淎s a polytechnic institution, we provide enhanced education, training and applied research opportunities that prepare students for the workforce and meet the needs of industry,鈥 says Chad Flinn, Associate Vice President, Academic. 鈥淭he Student Science Conference and Agora Conference showcased diverse projects and applied research that was conducted by students in several academic disciplines, complementing their education and helping to create real-world solutions.鈥濃 At the two-day Student Science Conference, attendees were able to view a range of posters and discuss the findings with student researchers. Guests also had opportunities to expand their learning by attending formal student presentations on a variety of scientific topics.鈥 In addition, the Student Science Conference featured keynote speaker Dr. Jeff Biernaskie, Professor of Comparative Biology & Experimental Medicine at the University of Calgary. Dr. Biernaskie鈥檚 research focuses on stem cell biology and tissue regeneration in the skin and brain.鈥 The Agora Conference also provided opportunities for 性吧导航 students

性吧导航 ranks in top 50 for research among Canadian polytechnics and colleges
性吧导航 (性吧导航) is proud to be listed as one of Canada鈥檚 Top 50 Research Polytechnics and Colleges by Research Infosource Inc. Ranked 43 overall, 性吧导航 was also ranked fourth for completed research projects, 19th for research partnerships and 17th for paid student researchers. 鈥淭o be recognized across Canada for our multi-disciplinary applied research is an honour and it reflects 性吧导航鈥檚 commitment to advancing our research capacity,鈥 says Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Associate Vice President, Applied Research. 鈥淲e are excited to continue growing our partnerships and solving challenges for industry and the community. By aligning our teaching, learning and applied research with Alberta鈥檚 key economic and social priorities, we make a significant impact in the province and beyond.鈥 In 2022, 性吧导航 attracted more than $2 million in applied research investment. Home to the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC) and Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), 性吧导航 is a leader in advanced manufacturing and energy innovation applied research.
